While working on cleaning my garage this morning I found this impossibly cute critter.

Kinja'd!!!

He was smaller than my fist and also very dumb. This rabbit does not have strong survival skills, I was able to get within 6 inches of it and they didn’t move. I grabbed my wife to show her and it was still there.

I w as actually able to poke it and it didn’t move. I had to put on gloves and pick it up to m ove out of the garage.

At any rate - happy Monday Oppo!

i had a garage bunny... it as not good news

I noticed I had a bunny becuase of the bunny poop everywhere. I could not locate a bunny.

Some time later a smell notified me that the bunny had expired. The smell was the only method by which I was able to locate it under/behind the stairs.

I’ve eaten many a rabbit, they're delicious! Wild rabbit is dark meat too.  This guy was way too small though and it's not rabbit season yet.

Yeah, that’s why he got moved out. There might be another in there, the Mrs told me she heard something large moving the garage later.  I'll look for it, but may end up with a dead bunny in there too.

I spent one summer working maintenance at a country club. One of the other workers was known to bag the mallards around the club and take them home to eat.

Yep, that pretty much true. When full size cotton tails aren't cute, just rabbits. This guy is not long out of the nest though, and thus is cute!

We have rabbits everywhere!  They’ve stopped hanging out in our front yard, at least. We’ve had two owls that have taken up residence on the front of our house. The back yard is a bunny playground, though, until my dog chases them off.

Kinja'd!!!

I hosed the roof off of bones last week, messy critters.

Fantastic! I worked at a Six Flags for a few years and it closed the end of November just in time for deer season. The security officers would bow hunt for deer in the park.

Oof, unfortunately I know the feel.

We had a raccoon get into our attic shortly after we moved in. We closed up the hole in the soffit but it seems while momma ‘coon was out, she had had a litter up there. A couple of little ones were trapped outside with her but one remained in the house and somehow worked its way through the second floor, likely by way of the HVAC return, to end up between the framing and drywall around the bottom of the stairs on the lower level .

W e found it several days later as the smell began to permeate the house and the decaying baby trash panda stained the aforementioned drywall. We made a hole in the drywall with a crowbar and grabbed what was left of the little guy, cleaned up the rest of  the affected drywall and disinfected the hell out of everything around it. Still haven’t bothered to patch said drywall as it’s in the utility room under the stair where it’s never seen. :/

I wasn’t wearing my glasses and thought garage bunny was just another way of saying dust bunny, so I scrolled past...

I’m glad I slipped them on to see this was literally a bunny, and a cute one at that.

Messy, but still kind of cool. We had an owl stop by our place a few years back, just after dusk. It was really neat to hear it.

and it’s not rabbit season yet.

Is there a time of year when rabbits are particularly delicious? I would imagine rabbit season = whenever you are able to find rabbits :P

They hoot until about 5:30-6 am on the house. The amount of raptors in the neighborhood makes for fun bird watching. My wife watched in horror a couple of weeks ago when a hawk snagged a mourning dove off the fence. POOF, just an explosion of feathers.

My mom used to live outside of Tucson (Green Valley) and she had a tall palm tree in the back yard with a hawk family living in it. She also had an abundance of doves, and would regularly find dove heads on the ground under the tree after the hawks tossed them out of the nest.

My desk sits by a large window, and one day I was at the desk when a dove smacked hard into the window. It landed on the deck, either dead or out cold. I thought, “Damn, now I have to go deal with that.” I looked out about five minutes later and there was a very large hawk (Harris hawk, I think) on the railing of my deck. And me without my camera. When I came back from an errand, both the hawk and the dove were gone.

We have a  great horned owl that hoots in my neighbor’s trees all night long. I have seen a noted decrease in the rabbit population around my h ouse.

Well there is a time where you are legally allowed to hunt/kill rabbits. In Missouri it goes from October 15th to January 15th every year and a limit of 6 rabbits per day.

Also in Missouri they can carry a bacteria which can be harmful to a human so you want to wait until after the first hard freeze which will kill the sickly rabbits.

Also yes I am a hick who grew up hunting rabbit and squirrel :)

My wife makes a mean rabbit and dumplings which is amazing!  I wouldn’t say it tastes like chicken, like a less gamey squirrel.

Very Cool!

We have owls, hawks and in winter juvenile bald eagles that hang around. Lots of squirrels, rabbits and birds. Had a den of red foxes a few years ago next across the road from our yard. The dog absolutely lost her shit about that one though and we didn’t sleep well for months as they’d play at night and make a racket, waking the dog (and by proxy us) up.

I had two, just about the same size, run into the garage yesterday while working on my new (to me) MTB. They were on the run from a few Ravens. I waited a while for the birds to clear out and then flushed them out.

I put this guy on the ground a couple feet away from a big lilac bush and he still just stayed there in a puff ball so I nudged him with my foot a couple times until he wandered into the bush.

He’s not long for this world and will be eaten soon.

It’s quite common to see hawks eating rabbits on the light poles here, rabbit legs dangling off each side. I’ve picked up a few half rabbits in the backyard.

We have coyotes in the neighborhood, but not a lot of foxes. There’s one lone one that loops by every night around dusk. You can hear the packs of them whooping it up at night. There’s definitely enough food to keep them all plump, squirrels, rabbits, voles, prairie dogs, small birds, and unfortunately, small dogs and cats.

We’ve been getting more coyotes in our neighborhood as the construction continues. About once a week, there’s a report on our email group of a coyote on the hiking trail with a cat in its mouth.

This guy is old enough he’s on his own now. Rabbits are pretty brutal on how soon they kick the fuzzy ones out of the nest.

Haha, well I learnt a lot from your response! Certainly taking some great diversity in knowledge with you to San Jose - might help spawn the next big start up...or you might be a Dwight-like figure with extensive yet useless knowledge about beets, bears, and battlestar galactica. Great addition either way!

Probably the second - it’s what I am to my current group of friends. The dude you come and ask random outdoor questions or the one that drags you on a hike/camping trip.  My knowledge of flora and fauna out west is lacking, but if you want to know things about the midwest or our conservation policies and history I can tell you that!

That’s really the best case scenario for doves. There was a few at my in-laws’ place for years. A hawk moved into the neighbourhood an took care of that problem.
